Director’s Notes
“Other Desert Cities” is a
comedy/drama about a family and how they deal with one another
in the context of a family tragedy. Lyman and Polly Wyeth live
in Palm Springs, California, in a mid-century modern house.
Lyman is a retired movie star and government diplomat. Polly
wrote novels along with her sister Silda, who now lives with the
Wyeths. Polly and Silda are ethnic Jews. Polly and Lyman’s adult
children are visiting for Christmas. Trip produces reality
television shows in Los Angeles and Brooke is a writer who had
some success with her first book but has been struggling for the
past several years to produce a second book. She has not been
home for a number of years and is only there now to have her
family review an expose book about her younger brother Henry’s
suicide following a much-publicized bombing by him and others
that caused the death of one person.
Characters
Polly Wyeth – “…elegant and forthright and whip-smart…” Conservative politically. Loves her children but not in a warm, cuddly way.
Lyman Wyeth – “Sturdy in the way of old Californians of a particular type.” Movie star good looks. Conservative politically. Normally concedes to his wife’s leadership.
Brooke Wyeth – “An attractive and dry woman.” She was in a mental institution for a while following a breakdown.
Trip Wyeth – “…a bright, funny man, perhaps a decade (Brooke’s) junior.”
Silda Grauman – “A mess. No makeup, hair disheveled.” A free spirit. A recovering alcoholic.
